In addition to being an attorney, David Schafer is also the author of four novels.

The Misdemeanor Man

Federal Public Defender Frank McGarrity thinks his indigent and trouble-prone client is probably guilty. After all, the two surviving victims cross-racially identified Thomas Calhoun as the rapist and murderer. After Calhoun is convicted, other crimes on Fort Dix point to another perpetrator. It’s up to McGarrity to prove Calhoun innocent, but McGarrity becomes a suspect in one of the other murders. He finally understands how it feels to be wrongly accused of a heinous crime, but it may be too late when he’s targeted by the real killer.

Praise for Riders on the Storm:

“This book is exemplary in character appeal (or interest) and development. All main characters (including antagonists) are unique and fully fleshed out with compelling, layered motivations and traits. Secondary characters are unique and have a meaningful purpose.”

“It has a unique voice, and the writing style is consistent throughout. The style and tone are also consistent with or will appeal to readers of the intended genre.”

Judge, 30th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards

“Well done! I enjoyed reading your book. Your storyline is well-written, exciting, and has all the twists and turns that will keep readers turning the pages. There are a lot of characters–this you know–and it was challenging keeping up with them.”

“The characters, especially the protagonist and antagonist are strong and memorable and the plot is realistic. The harassment these young men struggle with is exactly what Black men deal with in our culture every single day. You have done an extraordinary job capturing this struggle.”

Sun Walker

Beck, son of a plantation owner and a barn slave, flees west after he’s accused of killing his father. In Missouri, he volunteers for a huge trapping party heading north on two keel boats. Attacked by Arikara, he is rescued by three Crows, Sun Walker and her cousins. Back with his land party, he volunteers for dangerous missions as they fight fire, disease and hostiles. Sun Walker saves him again after he’s mauled by a panther and targeted by enemies. Again with his party, he pilots a boat downriver but is taken prisoner by his half-brother, fort commander, who led the claim Beck was their father’s murderer.
